It can be hard to find the motivation this time of year to head outside and get your exercise in. The cold winter breeze is enough to make most reasonable people turn the other way and enjoy their home’s heating system. But it’s important to get outside year-round, even with the cold. But before you go, follow tips on outdoor winter exercise and make sure you have what you need for winter workout clothes.
Base Layer
Every structure needs a strong foundation, and it’s the same concept when it comes to your winter workout wardrobe. Thermal tights can be enough on their own but are also slim enough to fit an extra layer over them for added warmth without sacrificing ease of movement. A thermal hoodie is also a good starting place for the upper body for the same reason, as it’s good not to pack on too much weight in the base layers.
Over Layer
Your core is what keeps warm the longest, but it still needs protection against the cold. A water and wind-resistant winter jacket is ideal; you don’t want the wind blowing straight through the fabric or snow to melt and begin to soak you. The thermal hoodie will keep the warm in, and the jacket will keep all the cold out.
Headgear
The old saying goes that most of your body heat escapes from your head, and while that may not be completely true, it is still partly true. While the head retains much of its heat, it’s the ears that need most of the covering. A knit cap covering the ears or earmuffs will do the trick to keep them warm.
Gloves and Footwear
Much like the ears, it’s doubly important to have warm gloves and socks, as hands and feet are the furthest appendages from your core. The fingers and toes are the first things to go when it gets cold, and you won’t be outside too long without proper hand and footwear. Tight thermal socks and gloves will do the job to keep your extremities safe and frostbite-free. As for shoes, you need water-resistant ones, since once those socks get wet it’s time to call it a day.
That’s the long and short of it for choosing the right winter protection. Remember to keep warm, keep active, and make sure you have what you need for winter workout clothes.
