There is nothing more mortifying than injuring yourself in the workplace. You’ve taken the stairs every day for six months, and today is the day that your foot decided not to work properly and off you slid – down the whole flight of stairs!
You can put as much prevention in place as you like, but really, no one can stop a workplace injury from happening. If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen no matter what you do! Did you know that every year there are 3 million workplace injuries that occur? Not many people know that! The key is in knowing what to do when one happens to you. So, with that in mind, we’ve got a list of seven things that you should do if you suffer an injury in the workplace.
- Before you do anything else, get to safety if you can. If you’ve had a fall at work in a high-traffic area, you will need to be moved out of the way so that you aren’t subjected to any further injury. Call for help and ask someone to help you move.
- If you’ve been injured because of workplace machinery, then you need to raise the alarm that there is a problem with the machine so that no one else is injured because of it. Ask someone to tell the rest of the company and raise the alarm that you need help now.
- It’s so important that you seek treatment. Even if you cannot see any visible injuries on your person, you need to speak to the doctor. There is every chance that you have fallen or injured yourself because of something that shouldn’t have been in the workplace. So, you’ll need not just any personal injury lawyer, but one who can specialize in these types of injuries. An accident report and hospital report will help your claim.
- Speaking of reports, you need to file the injury report with your workplace. You can’t claim compensation without this step as not letting your place of work know is not okay!
- Speak to an attorney as soon as you can. You want to be able to file a personal injury claim for your injury and know that it’s being taken seriously by someone who can walk you through the process for workers compensation.
- You may not pursue legal action, but you absolutely want to pursue workers compensation, as without this you’re going to have a problem with paying your bills! You need to ensure that you are able to continue paying your mortgage and your workplace may be liable for compensation. You need to file for these workers compensation benefits – even without legal action. You may have treatment to pay for and it’s not for you to bankrupt yourself to do it.
- Get the right care afterwards. If you’re off work for some time, make sure that you take any prescribed medication and attend any necessary therapy to get well as soon as you can. Yoga and other gentle exercise will be a good idea if you need to start moving again!
