The Honest Truth About Getting Older: Life & Health Shifts That Need Talking About’

Getting older doesn’t happen in one big moment. For most people, it is a small, gradual process that you don’t even notice at first, but then small physical changes become a part of your everyday life, and your health begins to shift. You may notice that one day, you take longer to recover than usual after a busy week. Another day, you need extra lighting when trying to read your book. Over time, the body starts to send you signals that it is changing. This can be challenging when you still mentally feel so young.

Ageing is often discussed as just a number, or perhaps even emotions that are involved; there is also a whole physical side that needs to be considered. Getting older comes with many normal changes, yet they can still catch people off guard. Many people also think that it is the end of the road when their health starts to change along with their age. However, it is less about what you can’t do and more about how you can embrace aging, adapt to a body that works differently than it did once and support yourself to improve your health along the way.

Changes in energy and recovery

One of the most common health shifts that people notice as they get older is the tiredness and exhaustion they experience, without any justification. Sleep can become lighter, stress affects the body more deeply, and energy levels can change quite drastically (and quickly) throughout the day.

People notice that after something like an illness, stress, poor sleep or a weekend filled with plans, recovery is a lot slower. Natural aging, hormonal changes and stress all play a role in the way that you feel each day. You might start to feel more tired after things that used to once feel manageable.

Eyes and ears

Vision and hearing changes are another part of aging that people forget about. It is common, but because you are used to them, it can still catch you off guard when it begins to change. It can start small, with struggling to read in dim lighting and finding it harder to hear sounds like crowded places. If you are a busy parent, this might become noticeable when spending time with your children.

This can begin to progress, but the rate will be different for everyone. Eyes might become more sensitive and dry. Your hearing may make it hard to follow conversations, and most people may experience symptoms of tinnitus. This is really common in midlife, yet it isn’t often talked about. But proper tinnitus management can reduce the problem.

Joints and bones

Joints and bones naturally change over time, and depending on your lifestyle, this could be quicker and more difficult, or a slow process that you don’t notice for a long time. Simple movements that you didn’t even have to think about slowly start to come with stiffness, aches or cracking. Knees begin to complain after walks, and you find your back aches often. Bone health becomes a crucial factor to consider when you get older, as the bone density can change over time, especially for women with hormonal changes.

Ageing changes the body in a number of different ways, from eyesight to sleep. Some changes are frustrating, while some just become a part of your normal life. With a good lifestyle and healthy habits, you can certainly improve these.
