Abandoned Lots
Empty, unmonitored lots may seem great for parking overnight, but they could be hotspots for criminal activity. With no surveillance cameras or regular foot traffic, these spaces leave your car vulnerable to theft or vandalism.
Avoid theft and bumper damage in parking lots by storing your car somewhere safe for the night. Instead, take your car to parking garages with active security patrols or well-lit streets.
Dimly Lit Streets
Residential streets typically provide legal parking during specified times, but poor lighting on these streets makes it easy for people to conduct illicit activities undetected. It also increases the risk of theft, and you won’t be able to see sharp objects on the street clearly. Rather than taking the risk, park on roads illuminated by streetlights or near commercial establishments with exterior lighting.
Near Construction Zones
Parking near construction sites prone to falling debris, dust, and machinery can damage your car. Also, unsecured construction zones often attract vandals or scavengers looking for tools and materials. You shouldn’t park your car in places where it could sustain damage overnight; instead, head for fully constructed and sheltered areas.
Isolated Rural Roads
Pedestrians and motorists are rare at night on quiet country roads, so this could lead to undetected crime as well. The remoteness of these areas makes it harder to protect your vehicle or get assistance in case of emergencies. If you have to park overnight in a rural area, look for a rest stop on your smartphone’s or vehicle’s GPS.
Public Parks After Dark
If you park your car in a public park, it could get stuck there overnight if you don’t get it before the gates close. Stranded vehicles are susceptible to damage or break-ins. Criminals often target these areas since there are fewer people around after dark. Consider parking in nearby residential streets or lots instead.
Near Bars or Nightclubs
Bars and nightclubs draw large crowds, and the surrounding parking zones aren’t ideal for overnight stays. Drunk drivers, reckless behavior, and altercations in these areas can put your car at risk of accidental or intentional damage. Rather than parking your car in these public areas, look for paid or secured parking areas farther away from nightlife.
When you return to your car in the morning, look for tampering or damage around the exterior. Also, inspect the items in your vehicle to see if anything went missing overnight. Once everything looks good, hop into your car and continue your adventure!
