If you are planning a trip to Nevada Lake Mead Recreation Area is a place you don’t want to miss. Lake Mead is America’s first and largest recreation area. Needless to say there is tons to do whether you want a short day hike, a day on the lake or an exciting camping trip. And of course there is the famous Hoover Dam.

Hiking

One of the best ways to explore the Lake Mead area is on foot. There are 15 trails that range in difficulty. We hiked a short portion of the Arizona Hot Spring Canyon Trail. Even though we knew we wouldn’t finish this strenuous trail, we wanted to at least give it a shot and stretch out legs after the drive from the Grand Canyon to Las Vegas.

During this hike we walked through the desert. We saw some fascinating rock formations and cactus. It felt like we were walking on another planet. If you are going to do a hike, be sure to bring lots of water. Even in the winter the dry desert will leave you parched.

Camping

There are lots of campgrounds to choose from in the Lake Mead area. There are group campsites, rv sites will full hookups, back country camping and car camping. Camping at Lake Mead is a fantastic way to spend some time exploring the area and getting out in nature.

Swimming

There are 6 popular places to swim at Lake Mead. Most of these places have life jacket loaner stations for your safety. The recreation area highly encourages everyone to use life jackets while swimming in the area. You can easily get swept away by the wind and find yourself away from shore.

Boating

Of course a trip to the lake wouldn’t be complete without being on a boat. There are more than 290 square miles of waterway to enjoy. You can bring your own boat or rent one from the marina. Just be sure to follow the rules of the water for your safety and the safety of others around you.
