The Best Summer Vacation Spots for You and Your Kids

A family with two adults and two children running across a sandy beach beside ocean waves at sunset on a clear evening.

Every summer, the same question comes up: where are we going this year? Then reality sets in, because finding a place that fits your family can take more work than expected. You want something the kids will love, something you won’t hate, and ideally something that doesn’t require a second mortgage. The good news is there are genuinely great places out there that check all three boxes. Here’s a look at some of the best summer vacation spots for you and your kids, wherever your family tends to land on the beach-versus-adventure spectrum.

Orlando, Florida

If your kids are into theme parks, Orlando is the obvious starting point. Walt Disney World alone covers 40 square miles and has four major parks, two water parks, and more restaurants than you’ll ever get to. Universal’s Epic Universe opened for its first full summer in 2026, with five new worlds including a Nintendo-themed area and an expanded Harry Potter section. Between Disney and Universal, you can build the whole trip around your kids’ favorite stories and characters.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

For families who’d rather trade rides for wildlife, Yellowstone is hard to beat. The park is home to the largest free-roaming bison herd in the country, and kids can spot them grazing in wide valleys or moving along the road in slow, heavy groups. Elk are another common sight, especially near Mammoth Hot Springs, where they wander through open areas like they own the place. For kids who’ve only seen animals at zoos, Yellowstone shows them what wildlife looks like when the animals move through their own habitat.

Washington, D.C.

Want a vacation that feels like a field trip for the whole family? Washington, D.C., is home to 19 different Smithsonian museums, and admission is free at all of them. Spend the day at the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of Natural History, or the National Museum of American History. In addition to the museums, you can see major landmarks in D.C., like the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument.

Hawaii

Summer is all about that beachy, laid-back pace where the days feel longer and the water is always calling. If you want to capture that feeling on a trip your kids will remember for years, why not visit a destination that screams sun, history, and natural beauty, like Hawaii?

Hawaii is made up of eight main islands, the most popular for visitors being Oahu and Maui. Oahu is home to Pearl Harbor; there’s a lot to do and see here in the summertime, like touring the USS Arizona Memorial, boarding the Battleship Missouri, exploring the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum, and walking the Ford Island Historical Trail, and it can be a great educational experience for you and your kids. Other Oahu attractions include Waikiki Beach, Hanauma Bay for snorkeling, Diamond Head State Monument, and the Polynesian Cultural Center on the North Shore. Maui is best-known for the Road to Hana, sunrise hikes on Haleakala Volcano, and snorkeling at Molokini Crater.

You’ve Got Options

The best summer vacation spots for you and your kids aren’t the same for every family. Pick Orlando if your kids would light up over a full day at Magic Kingdom. Pick Yellowstone if they’d get more out of seeing Old Faithful erupt than waiting in another theme park line. Pick Hawaii if you want your kids to stand at Pearl Harbor, see the USS Arizona Memorial, and understand why families still visit that harbor decades later.

Whatever fits your crew, book early. Peak summer availability fills up faster than most people expect, and the last thing you want is to be scrambling for lodging in July.
